Is Windows Defender enough for a home office, or should I pay for a premium antivirus suite?
I've heard that Windows Defender has improved significantly and now ranks high in independent lab tests. As a freelancer working from home, do I really need to pay $60 a year for a third-party antivirus, or am I just buying "bloatware" that doesn't offer any real extra protection for my data?

All answers to this question.
For a standard user, Windows Defender is excellent and very well-integrated. However, "Premium" suites usually offer features Defender lacks, such as a built-in VPN, password managers, and more importantly, better protection against Phishing and malicious URLs at the browser level. Paid suites also often include "Ransomware Rollback" features that automatically back up files if a suspicious encryption process is detected. If you are a freelancer handling sensitive client files, that extra $5 a month is basically an insurance policy. If you're just gaming and browsing known sites, Defender plus a bit of common sense is usually sufficient.

Are you also using a secondary layer like a hardware security key or a dedicated firewall, or would the antivirus be your only line of defense?

I use a YubiKey for my main accounts, Kevin, so I’m less worried about account takeover. My main concern is my local project files. I’m leaning toward a paid version specifically for the "Safe Browsing" features, as I often have to research new tools on some pretty obscure forums and sites. I’d rather have the AV block a bad script before it even reaches my browser cache.

Check your ISP’s plan; many of them provide a premium antivirus subscription for free as part of your internet package.

I didn't even think of that, Melissa! I just checked and my provider offers a full security suite for up to 5 devices. That saves me some money!
