Will AI code generation reduce junior engineering salaries?

I am worried that even if tech companies keep hiring entry-level engineers, the widespread adoption of automation will drive down wages significantly. If anyone can spin up a functional app using LLMs, will AI replace junior developers within 5 years or simply commoditize the role to lower baseline salaries?

All answers to this question.

While automation lowers the barrier to entry for writing basic scripts, it actually amplifies the economic value of developers who can ship production-grade software without bugs. Salaries for entry-level engineers who only know how to build simple, repetitive landing pages might face downward pressure. However, juniors who master debugging, system security, and integration will see their market value rise because their net productivity output is doubled by automated tools. Focus on high-value skills.

Could this wage bifurcation mean that the gap between a junior engineer and a mid-level engineer will narrow much faster because automation accelerates the learning curve?

  • Franklin, that is a distinct possibility. Dedicated junior engineers who leverage these systems correctly can gain exposure to advanced architectural problems much earlier in their careers, allowing them to reach mid-level autonomy and higher pay scales in half the traditional time.

The market is adjusting to value operational output over raw code volume. If you can deliver stable features independently using automation, your salary will stay high.

  • Exactly, Megan. Code volume was always a poor metric. The developers who focus on solving real business problems efficiently are the ones who command the highest compensation.
