Are standalone ChatGPT-based apps still viable now that Agentic OS is built into most phones?

With the launch of the latest mobile operating systems that have native "Agentic Overlays," I’m worried that custom AI apps are becoming redundant. Is there still a market for niche ChatGPT "wrappers" if the phone's native AI can already read the screen and take actions? Should developers focus on building "MCP Servers" (Model Context Protocol) instead of standalone apps in 2026?

All answers to this question.

The "app" is evolving into the "skill." You're right that simple UI wrappers are dead. The real value in 2026 is building MCP Servers that allow the world's most powerful agents to access your specific, high-quality data. If you build a specialized server for "Real-time Medical Inventory," any agent (ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) can use your tool to solve a user's problem. You charge for the data access and the specialized logic, not the interface. The future isn't a standalone icon on a screen; it’s being the "brain" behind the native OS agent’s actions.

If we move toward a "headless" MCP model, how do we maintain brand loyalty when the user never actually sees our company's logo or interface?

  • Douglas, that is the million-dollar question for 2026! We’ve shifted to "Attribution-based Branding." When an agent uses our tool, the native OS is required to cite the source, e.g., "According to the iCertGlobal Logic Engine..." It’s similar to how Intel survived as a component. You become the "Ingredient Brand" that powers the intelligence. It’s a shift from B2C to B2B2A (Business-to-Business-to-Agent).

I think there’s still room for "Local-First" AI apps that emphasize privacy. People don't want the big cloud agents reading their most sensitive medical or financial data.

  • Totally agree, Melissa. Privacy-focused ChatGPT implementations are a huge growth area right now.
