How can we effectively use Gantt charts in an Agile or Scrum environment?

This is the "Hybrid" challenge many of us face. The best strategy is to use the Gantt chart for "Epics" rather than individual "User Stories." Your Gantt bars represent the anticipated duration of a feature set based on team velocity. Instead of precise dates, use a "Rolling Wave Planning" approach. The current and next sprint are detailed with high confidence, while future quarters are represented by longer, fuzzier bars. Tools like Jira Product Discovery or Aha! allow you to visualize these themes on a timeline while the dev team works in their backlogs. It provides the "When" for executives without micro-managing the "How" for the developers.

• That is always the risk, Susan. To mitigate this, we add "Confidence Intervals" or "Buffer Zones" visually on the Gantt chart. We label the timeline as a "Forecast" rather than a "Commitment." By educating stakeholders that the bars will change based on the learnings from each sprint demo, you set the right expectations. It’s about using the Gantt chart as a communication tool for direction, not a legal contract for specific delivery dates. This keeps the executives happy without stifling the team's ability to pivot based on feedback.

We use "Milestones" on our Agile Gantt to show external dependencies, like a marketing launch or a trade show, which are fixed dates we must align with.
