Is the current US job market actually stabilizing or is the cooling trend getting worse?

I’ve been reading conflicting reports about the economy lately. Some say we are heading for a soft landing, but I’m seeing a massive slowdown in hiring outside of healthcare. With the rise of Cloud Technology allowing companies to outsource more roles globally, is the domestic market actually recovering, or are we just masking a deeper downturn with low unemployment numbers?

All answers to this question.

The situation is definitely nuanced. While the headline unemployment rate remains relatively low, the "hiring rate" has actually hit its lowest point since 2013, excluding the pandemic anomaly. Companies aren't necessarily doing mass layoffs across the board, but they have moved into a "wait and see" mode. In the Cloud Technology sector, we're seeing a shift where firms are prioritizing efficiency and automation over raw headcount. They are still spending money, but it's going into infrastructure and specialized architecture rather than expanding general teams. So, for the average job seeker, it feels much worse than the official "recovery" narrative suggests because the volume of open seats has shrunk significantly.

Do you think the shift to remote work and global hiring is a bigger threat to US jobs than high interest rates?

  • Marcus, they are intertwined. High rates make companies obsessed with margins, which then drives them to leverage Cloud Technology to hire cheaper talent in different time zones. It’s a double whammy for the domestic market. We are seeing a "borderless" workforce emerge, which helps the company's bottom line but definitely makes the local US job hunt feel like it's getting a lot tougher for mid-level professionals.

It’s a "bifurcated" market. If you are in healthcare or green energy, it’s recovering. If you are in tech or finance, it’s arguably getting worse.

  • Exactly, Shannon. I’ve noticed that Cloud Technology roles are still plentiful, but the requirements are now so specific that it's hard for generalists to break in.
