How do I transition from a Network Administrator role into professional White Hat Hacking?

I have been working as a Network Administrator for over four years, managing Cisco routers and firewalls, but I am looking to pivot into the ethical hacking domain. I am familiar with TCP/IP and basic security protocols, but I’m struggling to understand which specific tools and certifications like CEH or OSCP I should prioritize first to land a junior penetration tester role in today's market.

All answers to this question.

Start by setting up a home lab with Kali Linux and vulnerable VMs like Metasploitable. Hands-on practice is more valuable than any theory for your first interview.

  • I completely agree with Jessica. Robert, building a lab allows you to practice the 5 phases of hacking—reconnaissance, scanning, gaining access, maintaining access, and covering tracks—in a safe way.

Transitioning from networking is a brilliant move because you already understand the "plumbing" of the internet, which many beginners lack. I suggest starting with the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) to get a broad overview of the hacking phases, especially reconnaissance and scanning using Nmap. However, if you want to be taken seriously by technical recruiters, the OSCP is the gold standard for proving hands-on exploitation skills. Focus on mastering Linux and Python scripting, as automating your tasks is what separates a good hacker from a great one in a professional environment.

That is a solid background! Are you planning to focus more on web application penetration testing or are you leaning towards infrastructure and cloud security?

  • Michael, I’ve seen a massive trend toward Cloud Security lately. Most enterprises are migrating to AWS and Azure, so if Robert focuses on cloud-native exploits and IAM misconfigurations, he'll be much more employable. While web apps are great, the real money and demand in 2024-2025 are definitely in securing complex cloud architectures and hybrid environments.
