How do we transition to GA4 for better Digital Advertising attribution and tracking?

We are finally making the full switch to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) for our ad tracking, but the "Data-Driven Attribution" model is giving us very different results compared to Universal Analytics. How should we interpret these new metrics, and what are the best ways to set up custom dimensions to track our cross-channel advertising ROI effectively in 2024?

All answers to this question.

The shift to GA4 is jarring because it moves from session-based to event-based tracking. Data-driven attribution (DDA) is actually more accurate because it uses machine learning to assign credit to every touchpoint, not just the last click. To make it work, you need to ensure your UTM parameters are incredibly disciplined. We also found that setting up "Key Events" (formerly Conversions) correctly is vital. If you’re seeing lower numbers, it’s often because UA was over-counting through "ghost sessions," whereas GA4 is deduplicating users across devices much more efficiently.

Kimberly, that's helpful, but what about the "unassigned" traffic we keep seeing in our reports? Is there a specific way to fix the channel grouping in GA4 so our paid social ads don't get lost in the noise?

  • Lawrence, the "unassigned" issue usually happens when your UTM_Source or UTM_Medium doesn't match Google's "Default Channel Grouping" definitions exactly. For example, if you use "Social-Ads" instead of "Social," GA4 might get confused. I recommend going into the Admin panel and creating a "Custom Channel Group" where you can define exactly which tags belong to which category. This will clean up your reports and ensure your ad spend is correctly attributed to the right platform in your monthly ROI reviews.

Make sure you enable "Enhanced Measurement" in your data stream settings. It automatically tracks things like scrolls and video engagements, which are great for measuring upper-funnel ad impact.

  • Great point, Diane. Those micro-conversions give us a much clearer picture of how "Awareness" ads are performing even if the user doesn't buy immediately.
