How do Business Analysts transition into Data Analytics roles using SQL and Tableau?

I have been a traditional Business Analyst for 5 years, focusing mostly on requirements and documentation. I want to move toward a more data-driven role. Which technical skills should I prioritize first—SQL, Python, or data visualization tools like Tableau? Is there a specific roadmap for BAs?

All answers to this question.

Start with Excel Power Query and Pivot Tables. Most BAs already have Excel, and it’s a great stepping stone to more advanced data modeling.

  • Great point, Jennifer. Excel is often underrated, but mastering Power Pivot actually makes learning the logic behind Power BI and Tableau much faster.

The transition from a functional BA to a Data Analyst is very natural because you already understand the business context, which is the hardest part. I would strongly suggest starting with SQL. It is the backbone of data retrieval. Once you can query databases yourself, you no longer have to wait for the IT team to pull reports for you. After SQL, pick up a visualization tool like Tableau or Power BI. These tools allow you to turn raw data into actionable insights, which is exactly what stakeholders want. Python is great for automation, but for a BA moving into data, SQL and Viz tools are your "quick wins" for immediate impact.

Do you think certifications like the CBDA (Certification in Business Data Analytics) from IIBA are worth the investment?

  • David, the CBDA is excellent because it bridges the gap between pure data science and business strategy. It teaches you how to frame a business problem before you even touch the data. Many companies value this because it proves you aren't just a "tool user" but a strategic thinker who knows how to interpret the numbers to drive ROI. It definitely helped me get more interviews last year.
