How does Total Quality Management differ from Six Sigma in modern manufacturing?

I am looking to implement a quality framework in our mid-sized electronics plant. I often hear TQM and Six Sigma used interchangeably, but I know they have different roots. Can someone explain if TQM is still relevant today, or has it been completely replaced by the DMAIC process and statistical rigor of Six Sigma? I want to ensure our culture supports long-term growth.

All answers to this question.

TQM is essentially a management philosophy that focuses on a holistic approach to quality, involving every employee from the janitor to the CEO. While Six Sigma is a set of tools used to reduce variance and defects using hard data, TQM is about building a culture of "doing it right the first time." In my experience at an automotive firm in 2023, we found that Six Sigma projects often failed if we didn't have the underlying TQM culture to sustain them. Think of TQM as the foundation of the house and Six Sigma as the specialized tools you use to renovate specific rooms. Both are needed for true excellence.

Would you say that TQM is harder to measure in terms of ROI compared to the clear financial savings usually associated with a Black Belt Six Sigma project?

  • Steven, you hit the nail on the head. TQM’s ROI is often seen in long-term employee retention and customer loyalty, which are "soft" metrics compared to Six Sigma's "hard" cost savings.

Actually, many firms now use 'Lean TQM.' It combines the cultural aspects of TQM with the waste reduction of Lean to get the best of both worlds without the heavy math.

  • I agree with Jennifer. Integrating the two prevents "program fatigue" where employees feel overwhelmed by too many different quality initiatives at once.
