I ended up moving to a CISO-track role with a 40% salary hike. It’s a grueling exam, but it covers such a broad spectrum—from risk management to software development security—that it makes you indispensable for leadership. If you want the biggest financial leap, go for the CISSP. It proves you understand the business side of security, which is where the high-paying managerial roles actually live.

Brenda, that’s a massive salary hike! But for someone who prefers the technical side over the management side, would you still recommend CISSP over something like the OSCP for a direct salary boost? I'm worried about getting stuck in meetings all day.

• Gary, if you want to stay "hands-on-keyboard," then OSCP is definitely the way to go for a technical raise. It's highly respected for penetration testing. However, keep in mind that the highest salary ceilings in this industry are almost always in management. Even technical leads are often expected to have a CISSP to show they understand the broader organizational risk.

The CISM was my ticket to a higher bracket. It’s slightly more focused on management than CISSP, and for my specific path in governance and audit, it was a perfect fit.

• I've heard great things about CISM as well. It seems that any certification from ISACA or ISC2 carries enough weight to justify a major salary negotiation during your next performance review.
