How important is Data Analytics for a modern Business Analyst role?

I've noticed more job descriptions for BAs requiring SQL, Tableau, and PowerBI. Is the role moving away from functional requirements toward data science? How much technical data skill do I realistically need to stay competitive in the current market without becoming a full-time data analyst?

All answers to this question.

The role is definitely evolving. While functional requirements remain the core, being able to query your own data via SQL is a huge advantage. It allows you to perform "Evidence-Based Analysis" instead of relying on anecdotal evidence from stakeholders. You don't need to be a data scientist, but understanding data modeling and basic visualization in PowerBI helps you present your findings more persuasively. It’s about being able to validate the "Problem Statement" with hard numbers, which significantly increases your credibility with executive leadership and improves project ROI.

That makes sense, but are you finding that having these skills leads to "scope creep" in your own job description? Are you being asked to build production-level dashboards instead of focusing on business process improvement and requirements engineering for the software development team?

  • David, that’s a real risk. I make sure to distinguish between "Exploratory Data Analysis" for requirements and "Production Reporting." I use data to justify a business case or define a KPI, but I hand off the long-term dashboard maintenance to the BI team to protect my own bandwidth.

A BA who can read an E-R diagram and write a basic SELECT statement is worth their weight in gold during the initial phase of any large-scale system integration project.

  • Spot on, Richard. Being able to look at the database schema myself saved our team from a major mapping error last month that would have delayed our launch.
