Are Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) actually effective for running a business?

The "one token, one vote" model is definitely struggling. In 2023, we saw a shift toward "Reputation-Based Voting" and "Soulbound Tokens." This means your voting power is based on your actual contributions or expertise rather than just how much money you have. Some DAOs are also adopting a "Bicameral" system where one house is token-holders and the other is a council of elected experts. This brings back a level of "Professional Management" that pure decentralization often lacks.

Sandra, how do we prevent these "expert councils" from just becoming a new centralized board of directors that ignores the community's wishes?

• Jeffrey, that’s where "Optimistic Governance" comes in. The council makes day-to-day decisions to keep the project moving fast, but the token-holders have a "veto" period where they can overturn any decision if a certain percentage of the community disagrees. It’s a checks-and-balances system that allows for speed without sacrificing the core principle of community sovereignty. It's the "middle ground" Web3 has been looking for.

Most DAOs fail because they try to vote on everything. Successful ones only vote on high-level treasury spending and leave the small stuff to sub-groups.

• Exactly, Maria. Over-governance leads to fatigue. Efficient DAOs look more like "Agile" organizations with decentralized funding rather than a digital town hall where everyone screams.
