Should a Scrum Master have a technical background in Software Development?

There is a huge debate in our office. Half say a Scrum Master needs to understand the code to help remove technical blockers, while the other half says it's better to be non-technical to avoid biased solutions. As an SEO specialist looking for a career change, would I be at a disadvantage?

All answers to this question.

Knowledge of Agile values is 10x more important than knowledge of Python. You are there to fix the system, not the code.

  • True, Betty. I've seen brilliant lead devs fail as Scrum Masters because they couldn't stop interfering with the team's technical autonomy.

If the SM is non-technical, how do they know if the "blockers" being reported by devs are actually real or just excuses?

  • Daniel, you rely on the team's transparency. If you suspect something is off, you ask the team during the Daily Scrum: "Is there anything we can do to help move this along?" Usually, other devs will chime in if a task is taking longer than it should. You don't need to be an expert; you just need to facilitate the right conversation so the team holds itself accountable.

It’s a "nice to have," not a "must-have." A technical Scrum Master can spot when a developer is "gold-plating" or over-complicating a feature, but the danger is they might try to solve the problem for the team. A non-technical Scrum Master focuses more on the human dynamics and the "Definition of Ready." In 2024, the best SMs I see are "technically curious." They might not write Java, but they understand what a CI/CD pipeline is or why a staging environment is down. Your SEO background in data and process optimization is actually a huge asset.
