Which BI tool is better in a roadmap to become a data analyst: Tableau or Power BI?

I’m at the visualization stage of my learning. Every best roadmap to become a data analyst mentions both Tableau and Power BI. In the current job market, which one is more widely used? Should I learn both, or is it better to master one deeply to stand out to hiring managers?

All answers to this question.

If you are looking for the best roadmap to become a data analyst in a corporate setting, Power BI is currently leading because of its integration with the Microsoft ecosystem. However, Tableau is often preferred by design-heavy roles and startups that prioritize beautiful, interactive dashboards. My advice is to master Power BI first if you already know Excel, as the logic (DAX) is similar to Excel formulas. Once you understand the concepts of "dimensions" and "measures," switching to Tableau later is quite easy. Don't try to learn both at the same time; it will just confuse you.

Does the choice of tool depend more on the specific industry, like finance preferring Power BI and creative agencies leaning toward Tableau?

  • Raymond, absolutely. Finance and healthcare often stick to the Microsoft stack for security and cost reasons. If your best roadmap to become a data analyst involves working for a Fortune 500 company, Power BI is a safer bet. Creative tech and marketing firms love Tableau for its flexibility. Check LinkedIn for the specific companies you admire to see what they list in their job descriptions before you commit.

Mastering the principles of data visualization (like choosing the right chart) is more important than the specific software. The tool is just a means to an end.

  • Strongly agree with Julianne. I’ve switched between three different BI tools in my career, but the ability to present data clearly to stakeholders remains the same.
