How hard is the transition to Cyber Security for someone over 30 with no technical background?

I’ve been in law enforcement for 12 years and want to move into digital forensics or SOC analysis. My concern is whether it's too late to switch to IT in your 30s in the US when I don't know the basics of networking or Linux. How long does it typically take to become "job ready" in the security field if I’m starting from zero at this age?

All answers to this question.

Your law enforcement background is actually a massive advantage for Cyber Security, especially in GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) or Forensics. You already understand "chain of custody" and investigative procedures. You'll need to grind for about 6 to 9 months to get your CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+ certifications. Once you have those, you are a very attractive candidate because you have the "security mindset" that is hard to teach. I’ve seen many ex-military and police officers thrive in this field well into their 40s.

Have you looked into the GSEC or Security+ certifications yet? They are usually the standard entry point for someone moving from a non-tech background into the SOC.

  • William, those are definitely the right starting points. People worry it's too late to switch to IT in your 30s in the US, but security is more about persistence and ethics than just raw coding speed. A former cop with a Security+ is often trusted more with sensitive data than a college grad with no life experience.

I made the jump at 33. It’s a lot of studying, but the job security is unmatched. Companies are desperate for people who can actually follow protocols and document things.

  • Exactly, Deborah. Documentation and following standard operating procedures is half the job in a SOC environment, which perfectly suits someone with your background.
