Is the Digital Marketing field oversaturated for new graduates?

I see thousands of applicants for every "Digital Marketing Executive" role. It feels like everyone has a Google Ads or HubSpot certificate now. As a fresher, how do I actually stand out when the market is this crowded? Is it better to specialize in SEO or stay a generalist?

All answers to this question.

It feels oversaturated because most people only have "surface-level" knowledge. To stand out, you need to show results. Start a niche blog, optimize it for SEO, and drive actual organic traffic to it. If you can show a recruiter a graph from Google Search Console proving you moved a keyword to the first page, you’re hired. Generalists are okay for small startups, but high-paying roles in agencies require specialization. I’d recommend going deep into either Technical SEO or Data-Driven Performance Marketing (PPC) to make yourself indispensable.

Do you have any experience with AI-driven marketing tools, or are you still relying on traditional manual content creation?

  • Marcus hits on a major trend. In 2024, if you aren't using AI for keyword research or ad copy optimization, you're behind. Freshers should learn how to prompt-engineer for marketing and how to use tools like Jasper or Canva’s AI features. Showing you can double your output with AI is a massive selling point for any agency.

Networking on LinkedIn is more effective than applying on job boards. Find hiring managers at agencies you like and send them a personalized video pitch.

  • I agree, Alicia. A personalized approach always beats a generic "easy apply" click.
