How to make money by selling custom AI prompts as a digital product?

I’ve heard that "Prompt Engineering" is a new high-paying skill. Is there a market for selling these prompts on platforms like PromptBase or even my own site? I’ve spent a lot of time perfecting prompts for architectural visualization and marketing copy. I'm wondering if this is a sustainable side hustle or just a temporary trend that will disappear as AI gets smarter at understanding us.

All answers to this question.

Selling prompts is a great way to monetize the "hours of trial and error" you've already put in. While AI is getting better at understanding natural language, users still struggle to get specific, professional-grade results. Complex prompts that include parameters for lighting, camera angles (for images), or specific psychological triggers (for copy) are very valuable. To make it sustainable, don't just sell one-off prompts; package them into "Prompt Bundles" for specific industries, like "The Ultimate Real Estate Marketing Pack." This turns a simple string of text into a high-value digital asset that saves a business owner dozens of hours.

Do you think the market will crash once the big AI companies release "one-click" buttons for everything? It feels like we are just filling a temporary gap in the tech.

  • Timothy, while tools will get easier, the demand for "expert-level" customization will always exist. Think of it like Photoshop; anyone can use a filter, but pros pay for custom brushes and actions. Prompt engineering is becoming less about "coding" and more about "curating" the AI's creative direction. As long as businesses need unique, non-generic results to stand out, they will pay for the "formula" that produces those results consistently. You aren't just selling text; you're selling a predictable outcome.

I started selling Midjourney prompts on Etsy as digital downloads and it’s been a steady $200/month. People love prompts that help them create consistent brand characters.

  • That's a great niche, Melissa! Character consistency is one of the hardest things to master in AI art, so people will definitely pay to skip that learning curve.
