How do I pass the PMP exam on my first attempt without a 1-week bootcamp?

I can't afford the time or money for a high-intensity 4-day bootcamp. Is it realistic to self-study for the PMP? What are the best resources like simulators or YouTube channels that can help me get "Above Target" in all domains on a budget?

All answers to this question.

The "Mindset" is the most important part. Once you understand that the PM never goes to the boss for help immediately, you'll get 20% more questions right.

  • I agree with Linda. In the PMP world, the PM is a proactive problem solver. Always analyze first, then act!

How much time did you actually spend studying per day over how many months to feel confident?

  • Steven, I did about 1-2 hours a night for 3 months. In the final two weeks, I did one full-length mock exam every weekend to build "mental stamina." The real exam is nearly 4 hours long, so you have to train your brain to stay focused for that long. It’s more of an endurance test than a memory test.

It’s absolutely doable. In late 2023, I passed with 3 "Above Targets" purely through self-study. The key is a high-quality exam simulator. You need to get used to the "PMI-way" of thinking—which is often different from how we manage in the real world. I used the "Study Hall" app from PMI and a few highly-rated Udemy courses for my 35 contact hours. Spend 60% of your time on practice questions and 40% on reviewing why you got them wrong. If you can consistently hit 75% on a full 180-question mock exam, you are ready for the real thing.
