Should freshers learn Scrum or Kanban first for Agile roles?

I'm looking at entry-level Software Development and Project Coordinator roles, and they all mention Agile. I'm confused about which framework to master first. Is Scrum the industry standard, or is Kanban becoming more popular in 2024? Which one looks better on a resume for a fresher?

All answers to this question.

Scrum is generally the better one to learn "first" because it has a more structured set of rules (sprints, roles, ceremonies) that are easier for companies to teach to new hires. Most organizations use a Scrum framework for their development teams, so having a CSM (Certified Scrum Master) credential is very recognizable. Kanban is excellent for continuous delivery and support roles, but it requires a bit more maturity to execute well. Start with Scrum to understand the "Agile mindset," then add Kanban to your toolkit to show you understand flow and bottleneck management.

Are you more interested in the leadership side like a Scrum Master, or are you looking at this from a Developer's perspective?

  • Ryan, that's an important distinction. If the goal is a Developer role, you just need to know how to participate in a daily stand-up and manage your Jira board. If the goal is management, you need a much deeper dive into Scrum artifacts and values. For a fresher, knowing how to use Jira or Trello to track "Work in Progress" is usually the practical skill recruiters check for.

Most modern companies actually use "Scrumban"—a hybrid of both. Learn the basics of both so you can be flexible depending on the team's needs.

  • Exactly, Monica. Being adaptable is the core of being Agile anyway!
