Should we focus on SEO or Paid Search for a bootstrapped SaaS in the early growth stage?

We have a limited marketing budget and need to decide between the long-term play of Content Marketing/SEO and the immediate results of Google Ads. For a niche B2B SaaS, which channel typically yields a better ROI when you are trying to hit your first $10k in Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR)?

All answers to this question.

If you are bootstrapped, SEO is your best friend, but only if you target "Bottom of Funnel" (BoFu) keywords. Don't waste time on broad topics. Write "Competitor vs Us" or "Best [Niche] Software" articles. These have lower volume but much higher conversion intent. We spent $0 on ads and grew purely through a "Hub and Spoke" content strategy. By creating high-value guides that solved specific user pain points, we built authority and saw our organic traffic convert at 5%, compared to the usual 1-2% for paid ads. SEO is an asset that grows; Ads are a cost that stops the moment you stop paying.

How do you handle the "Lag Time" of SEO? If it takes 6 months to rank, how do you survive the first few months without any incoming leads from Ads?

  • Kenneth, you bridge the gap with "Cold Outreach" and LinkedIn networking. While our blog was gaining traction, our founders were manually reaching out to potential leads. This gave us the initial cash flow to sustain the business while the SEO "snowball" started rolling. By month 7, the organic leads surpassed our manual efforts and were essentially free.

I recommend a 80/20 split. Spend 80% of your time on SEO and 20% on very targeted, low-budget search ads to test your landing page conversion rates.

  • Sarah’s hybrid approach is very smart. Using a little bit of paid traffic to "smoke test" your messaging ensures you don't spend months ranking for keywords that don't actually convert.
