How do I create a realistic Risk Management Plan for a global project with remote teams?
I'm managing a project with teams in three different time zones. Beyond just "communication issues," what are the technical and cultural risks I should be putting into my Risk Register? How do you quantify the impact of things like regional holidays or differing work-life balance norms?

Use a Risk Heat Map. It helps stakeholders visualize why you’re asking for more budget for "unlikely" but "high-impact" events.

I agree with Steven. A visual map makes the "abstract" risks feel much more "real" to the sponsors during the initial planning phase.

Do you think a 24-hour "follow-the-sun" model actually increases productivity, or does it just lead to more bugs?

Mark, it's a high-risk, high-reward strategy. If your documentation is 10/10, it’s amazing. If your docs are 5/10, it’s a nightmare. In my experience, you need a senior "Liaison" who stays on for an hour of overlap to explain the nuances that text can't capture. Without that human bridge, the bug rate definitely climbs because the context gets lost in the handoff.

For a global project I ran in 2023, we added a "Knowledge Silo" risk to our register. When the US team sleeps, the India team works—if they get stuck, they lose a whole day. To mitigate this, we implemented a "Handover Document" protocol. We also quantified the risk by looking at historical data on "Wait Time." For cultural risks, don't just guess; ask the team leaders for a calendar of their local holidays six months in advance. We found that a single overlooked holiday in one region could delay a cross-region integration by four days, which is a significant impact on a tight schedule.
