How do we optimize Java startup time for Lambda functions using GraalVM Native Images?


Cold starts are killing our AWS Lambda performance. We are using a standard Java 17 runtime, but the initialization takes over 5 seconds. I’ve heard GraalVM can compile Java into a native binary to achieve sub-second startup times. Is the "Closed World" restriction of GraalVM too difficult to manage for a project that relies heavily on reflection and dynamic class loading?

GraalVM Native Image is the best solution for the "Java on Serverless" problem, but it requires a shift in mindset. You have to provide configuration files for any reflection, proxies, or JNI used by your libraries. If you are using modern frameworks like Quarkus or Micronaut, they handle most of this heavy lifting for you. In our project, we dropped our startup time from 6 seconds to 150 milliseconds. The trade-off is a much longer build time and the loss of some JIT optimizations that only happen during long-running JVM processes, but for Lambda, it is worth it.

Have you looked into AWS Lambda SnapStart as an alternative? It’s often easier than GraalVM because it just takes a snapshot of the initialized firecracker VM, avoiding the "Closed World" headache.

  • Mark, we tried SnapStart, but our security team had concerns about the state of the random number generator in the snapshots. GraalVM Native Image gives us a "clean" binary every time. While the configuration for reflection in our legacy libraries took about a week to finalize using the GraalVM tracing agent, the performance stability and the smaller memory footprint are helping us save about 40% on our monthly AWS execution costs.

Native images also use significantly less RAM. We were able to downsize our Lambda memory allocation from 1024MB to 256MB without seeing any OOM errors.
