How do I reduce high CPC in Google Ads without losing my search impression share?

Our campaign's average CPC has spiked by 35% this month, making our lead generation costs unsustainable. We need to maintain our top-of-page visibility for competitive keywords in the B2B space, but the bidding war is getting intense. What are the best strategies to improve Quality Score or use negative keywords effectively to bring these costs down while keeping our conversion volume steady?

All answers to this question.

The most effective way to drop CPC is to focus heavily on your landing page experience and ad relevance. I recently managed a project where we improved the Quality Score from 4 to 8 just by aligning the ad copy more closely with the specific search intent of the long-tail keywords. We also implemented a "bid capping" strategy on our automated bidding to prevent the algorithm from overspending during peak hours. Don't forget to audit your Search Terms report weekly to find expensive, irrelevant clicks to add to your negative keyword list.

Have you experimented with switching from 'Maximize Conversions' to a 'Target CPA' strategy to give the algorithm more specific boundaries on what you're willing to pay per lead?

  • Robert, that’s a great suggestion. We tried tCPA last quarter but found our impression share dropped too sharply. We’re currently testing a hybrid approach where we keep high-intent "buying" keywords on manual bidding and let the broader discovery keywords run on tCPA to balance out the total spend.

Check your ad extensions. Using all available assets like sitelinks and callouts improves your CTR, which directly boosts your Quality Score and can lower your actual cost-per-click.

  • Totally agree, Michael. Adding image assets was a game-changer for our CTR, which in turn helped our ad rank even with a slightly lower bid.
