Will Q-Day arrive sooner than expected and break our current RSA encryption standards?


With the recent headlines about Google and IBM hitting new logical qubit milestones, I’m getting increasingly worried about "Q-Day." As someone working in data security, I want to know if we are actually close to seeing quantum computers break RSA-2048 encryption. Is the transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) something we should be doing right now, or is the hardware still too unstable for real-world threats? I’d love to hear from anyone currently implementing NIST-approved algorithms.

The timeline for Q-Day is a moving target, but the consensus among researchers is shifting toward the early 2030s. However, the "harvest now, decrypt later" strategy used by some bad actors makes this an immediate concern. If you are handling sensitive data with long-term value, you should already be auditing your infrastructure for quantum readiness. We’ve started integrating Kyber and Dilithium, which are part of the NIST PQC standards, into our cloud architecture to ensure we aren't left vulnerable when stable, error-corrected quantum systems finally scale up.

Are you specifically looking at software-based PQC, or are you also considering Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) hardware for your network?

  • Mark, we are primarily focused on software-based post-quantum cryptography because QKD requires specialized fiber-optic infrastructure that isn't feasible for our current global remote-work setup. NIST’s chosen algorithms are designed to run on existing classical hardware, which makes the deployment much more cost-effective for enterprise-level data protection during this transition phase.

Most experts agree that while hardware is evolving, we are still a few years away from a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC), so there's no need to panic yet.
