How do I manage cloud costs effectively to avoid "Bill Shock" on AWS or Azure?

I’ve heard horror stories of people leaving a high-performance instance running and waking up to a $5,000 bill. As someone just starting to experiment with free tiers, what are the best practices for setting up budget alerts and cost caps? Are there specific tools within the consoles that can automatically shut down resources if they exceed a certain limit?

All answers to this question.

This is the most important skill for a beginner! The first thing you should do after creating an account is set up a "Billing Alarm." On AWS, you use AWS Budgets to send you an email if your forecasted spend exceeds even $1. In Azure, you can use "Cost Management + Billing" to set actual hard caps on certain resource groups. Also, always remember to use "Tags." If you tag every resource with its purpose (e.g., "Project=Learning"), you can easily track where the money is going. Never use a "standard" instance when a "spot" or "micro" instance will do for a simple test.

Are there any third-party open-source tools that are better than the native console tools for visualizing multi-cloud spending in a single dashboard?

  • Kevin, for a single user, the native tools are usually enough. However, for teams, tools like "Infracost" are amazing because they show you the cost before you even deploy your code via Terraform. There’s also "CloudCustodian" which can be programmed to automatically terminate any resource that doesn't follow your company's cost or security policies. Starting to think about "FinOps"—the practice of financial accountability in the cloud—is a huge career booster right now.

Just remember: "Stop" is not the same as "Terminate." You still pay for storage (EBS volumes) even if the instance is stopped! Always delete everything when you're done.

  • That bit about storage costs is exactly how I got my first $50 bill by accident! Larry's advice is a literal lifesaver for student wallets.
