Is your organization ready for the shift toward Post-Quantum Cryptography standards?

Quantum computing is no longer a distant threat; it’s becoming a core part of future Cybersecurity Trends. I’m curious if anyone has started the transition to NIST-approved quantum-resistant algorithms? What are the biggest hurdles you’re facing when upgrading legacy systems that rely on older RSA encryption?

All answers to this question.

The transition to post-quantum cryptography is likely one of the most expensive Cybersecurity Trends we will face this decade. Most legacy systems are not "crypto-agile," meaning the encryption is hardcoded into the application logic. We are currently in the discovery phase, mapping out every instance where RSA or ECC is used. The biggest hurdle isn't the new algorithms themselves, but the performance overhead they introduce. Some of the lattice-based signatures are significantly larger, which can slow down network handshakes and increase latency in real-time applications.

Do you think the "store now, decrypt later" strategy by state actors is a valid reason to rush this migration, or should we wait for more stable hardware?

  • Daniel, the "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later" threat is very real. Any sensitive data being transmitted today could be cracked in five years. That’s why many industries, especially finance and defense, are prioritizing the migration of long-term data storage to quantum-resistant standards immediately, even if the hardware isn't fully mature yet.

We've started by updating our VPN protocols first. It’s a manageable starting point before we tackle the much larger task of updating our entire database encryption layer.

  • That is a smart move, Helen. Securing the communication tunnels buys you time to address the at-rest data issues without exposing everything.
