Which is better for an enterprise Business Intelligence rollout: Power BI or Tableau in 2024?

Tableau is for the "Data Scientists" of the world, while Power BI is for the "Business Users." Choose based on who will be building the reports daily.

• Spot on, Susan. I’ll add that if your goal is democratizing data across the whole office, Power BI's familiar interface usually wins the internal "culture war."

Does Tableau still offer better performance when connecting to massive, non-Microsoft data sources like Snowflake or BigQuery?

• Steven, Tableau used to have a massive lead there, but Power BI’s "DirectQuery" and "Large Dataset Storage Format" have closed that gap significantly in 2024. If your Snowflake architecture is optimized, both tools will perform similarly. The real question now is whether your team prefers Tableau's "VizQL" or Power BI's "Tabular" model for data processing.

If you are already on M365, Power BI offers an unbeatable ROI. The integration with Teams, SharePoint, and Excel is seamless, and the licensing is usually part of your E5 subscription. I led a BI migration for a retail firm in 2023, and we found that while Tableau has slightly better "artistic" control for visualizations, Power BI’s DAX engine is incredibly powerful for complex financial modeling. Plus, the learning curve for staff already familiar with Pivot Tables is much shorter, allowing for faster "self-service" adoption across departments.
