How do I choose between the PMBOK Guide 6th and 7th Edition for my 2024 PMP exam prep?

I'm starting my PMP journey and I'm confused about the study materials. Everyone says the 7th Edition is the current one, but some bootcamps still reference the 6th. Which one should I prioritize to pass the current Examination Content Outline (ECO), and how much of the exam is actually Agile?

All answers to this question.

Focus on the Agile Practice Guide. It’s a short read compared to the PMBOK but it covers half the exam content!

  • Spot on, Susan. I’ll add that the 7th Edition's "Performance Domains" are the new bread and butter. If you master those, you're halfway to that "Above Target" score.

Did you find that the exam questions were more about the "Process" or more about "People" and leadership skills?

  • Steven, the exam is now split: 42% People, 50% Process, and 8% Business Environment. The "People" section is huge. You’ll get tons of scenarios where you have to resolve team conflict or coach a stakeholder. It’s less about knowing the formula for Earned Value and more about knowing how to keep a project moving when things get messy.

The current PMP exam is based on the ECO, not a single book, but the 7th Edition’s shift to "Principles" is what the exam reflects now. However, you still need to understand the "Process Groups" from the 6th Edition for the technical side of Waterfall. In my 2023 exam, about 50% of the questions were Agile or Hybrid. Don't just memorize; understand the "servant leadership" mindset. I spent about 100 hours on a simulator and found that the 7th Edition's focus on "Value Delivery" was the most critical concept for the situational questions.
