Is the PMP certification still valuable for Project Managers in the Agile era?

I see a lot of job postings asking for CSM or PSM, but the PMP seems so focused on traditional Waterfall. As someone looking to move into a Senior PM role, is it worth the 35 hours of training and the exam fee, or should I just focus on Agile-specific certifications?

All answers to this question.

PMP for the "How to run a business," CSM for the "How to run a team." You really need both for a Senior role.

  • Spot on, Dorothy. I found that the PMP gave me the vocabulary to talk to the CFO, while the Agile certs helped me talk to the developers.

Do you think the high cost of the PMP exam is a barrier that makes it less "inclusive" for younger project managers?

  • Thomas, it definitely is a hurdle. However, most medium-to-large companies will pay for it as professional development. If yours won't, consider it an investment in your "earning ceiling." Statistics consistently show that PMP-certified managers earn 15-20% more than their non-certified peers. It’s a steep entry price, but the return on investment usually happens within the first year of your next role.

The PMP was updated significantly in the last few years to be 50% Agile/Hybrid. It’s no longer just about the "Critical Path Method." In my 2024 job search, having the PMP was the "filter" that got me past the HR software, while my CSM was what we talked about during the actual interview. The PMP proves you understand the business side—budgeting, procurement, and legal compliance—which many Agile certifications completely ignore. If you want to move into leadership where you manage budgets of $1M+, the PMP is still the global gold standard for demonstrating professional rigor.
