What counts as "Project Management Experience" for the PMP application?

Does the experience have to be within the last few years, or can I use projects from a decade ago?

• David, if you have a four-year degree, you need 36 months of unique, non-overlapping professional project management experience within the last eight years. If it's older than 8 years, it won't count. Make sure your "months" don't overlap; if you ran two projects in June, that only counts as one month of experience on the application.

PMI cares about the tasks you performed, not your title. You need to show that you led and directed projects, which includes budget management, scheduling, and leading cross-functional teams. In my 2024 application, I used the "Domain" headers from the ECO (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring, and Closing) to describe my BA work. I highlighted how I managed stakeholder expectations and mitigated risks. As long as you were responsible for the project's outcome and followed a structured methodology, you're likely eligible. Just be honest and avoid using "we"—always use "I" to show your personal leadership.
