Is voice AI and frameworks like Pipecat the next major evolution in the post-ChatGPT era?

The shift toward voice is definitely happening, and Pipecat is at the center of it because it addresses the "latency gap." In traditional setups, you've got separate steps for transcription, reasoning, and synthesis that don't talk to each other well. Pipecat uses a pipeline architecture where frames of data move through the system asynchronously. This means the bot can start preparing a response while the user is still finishing their sentence. When I integrated it with Daily's transport layer last year, the response time dropped to under 800ms, which is close to human-level.

• Great question, Michael. Pipecat handles this through Voice Activity Detection (VAD) and "barge-in" support. When the user starts speaking, the framework can instantly cancel the current TTS playback and reset the pipeline. It makes the interaction feel much more natural because the AI actually "listens" for when it's being interrupted. I implemented this for a customer support prototype in October 2024, and the testers were genuinely shocked at how responsive the agent felt during heated back-and-forth exchanges.
