How can I use "Persona Prompting" to simulate a focus group for market research?

I want to test a new product idea and I’m curious if I can prompt ChatGPT to act as five different customer personas simultaneously. Is there a specific framework to ensure they don't all just agree with each other? I need them to have distinct biases, backgrounds, and pain points to get realistic feedback.

All answers to this question.

To avoid the "echo chamber" effect, you should use a "Multi-Agent System" prompt. Instead of one big prompt, give each persona its own paragraph. Define their "Demographics," "Core Values," and "Skeptical Bias." For example: "Persona 1 is a budget-conscious student who hates subscriptions. Persona 2 is a busy executive who values time over money." Crucially, tell the AI: "Argue against the product from the specific perspective of your assigned persona." This forced conflict creates much more realistic feedback than just asking for a general opinion.

This sounds amazing for brainstorming, but how do we know if these AI personas actually reflect real human behavior or if they are just repeating internet stereotypes?

  • That is a vital ethical consideration, Anthony. You should always "ground" your personas with real-world data from your actual customer surveys. If you have survey results, paste the summarized data into the prompt and tell the AI: "Model these personas based on the sentiment found in this data." This prevents the AI from relying on generic tropes and makes the simulation a much more accurate reflection of your specific target market.

I used this to prepare for a difficult client meeting. I prompted the AI to be the "Aggressive Negotiator" and it helped me find the holes in my own proposal!

  • Using AI as a "Red Team" for your own ideas is one of the most underrated applications of persona prompting. It’s like a free rehearsal for the real world.
