Is Performance Max better than standard Search campaigns for small business ROI?

Performance Max (PMax) can be powerful but it is a "black box" compared to Search. For a small business like a bakery, PMax is great because it hits YouTube, Display, and Maps automatically. However, you must use "Brand Exclusions" to prevent it from bidding on your own business name, which you likely already rank for organically. In my experience, PMax works best when you have at least 30 conversions a month so the AI has enough data to optimize. If your budget is under $500, I’d stick to Search with phrase match keywords to maintain tighter control over your spend and ensure you aren't showing up for irrelevant searches.

• Mark, I have Google Tag Manager set up for "Order Confirmation" clicks. I’m just hesitant to let the AI take over because I’ve been burned by broad match before. I think I’ll take Kimberly's advice and start a small PMax test alongside my search ads, but I’ll be sure to use the "Experiments" tool in Google Ads to see which one actually drives a lower Cost Per Acquisition before shifting the whole budget.

PMax is great for visual products. Since you are a bakery, the ability to show high-quality photos of your cakes on the Display Network and Instagram-like placements is a huge win.

• That’s a great point, Jessica. People eat with their eyes first! If you have professional food photography, PMax will definitely outperform text-heavy search ads on visual platforms.
