What was your most difficult obstacle while pivoting into a career in Project Management?

I am currently transitioning roles and finding it tough. Looking back at your career journey, what was the biggest hurdle you faced when trying to master Project Management methodologies like Scrum or Waterfall while managing a full-time workload?

All answers to this question.

My biggest challenge was definitely the shift in mindset from being a "doer" to a "facilitator." When I first moved into Project Management, I struggled with letting go of the technical tasks and focusing on the strategic oversight. Balancing a 40-hour work week while studying for my PMP certification was incredibly draining. I had to learn how to manage my time ruthlessly and apply the very concepts I was learning—like Agile prioritization—to my own daily schedule. It took about a year before I felt truly confident in leading a cross-functional team without second-guessing every decision I made.

That sounds intense, but did you find that stakeholder management was harder to learn than the actual technical frameworks?

  • You hit the nail on the head, Scott. Frameworks are just rules on paper, but managing personalities and conflicting expectations from stakeholders is where the real work happens. I spent a lot of time in my second year just refining my soft skills and negotiation tactics, which they don't always emphasize enough in basic certification training.

For me, the hardest part was learning to handle project failures. Seeing a budget go over or a deadline slip is a huge ego hit.

  • I agree, Gregory. Brenda mentioned the shift to facilitator, and part of that is taking responsibility for those slips while keeping the team motivated to pivot and find a solution quickly.
