How do we optimize for Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) to maintain organic traffic?

With Google rolling out the Search Generative Experience (SGE), our traditional SEO strategy feels like it's becoming obsolete overnight. We are seeing AI-generated snapshots taking up the entire "above the fold" space for our most profitable informational keywords. How should we be pivoting our content strategy to ensure we are still being cited as a source within the AI overview? Is there a specific schema markup or a way to structure our data that makes it easier for Google's LLM to crawl and verify our expert insights? We’re worried that our click-through rates will plummet if users get all their answers directly on the SERP without ever visiting our site.

All answers to this question.

To stay relevant in the SGE era, you must double down on E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). Google’s AI prioritizes sources that offer unique, first-hand experience that an LLM can't easily replicate. Start by incorporating more original research, case studies, and expert quotes into your articles. Structurally, use clear, concise headers and bulleted lists, as the AI tends to pull from well-organized data blocks. Also, ensure your Schema.org markup is flawless—specifically Article and Author schemas—to help the engine verify your credentials. If you provide the most "quotable" and verified answer, you’re more likely to appear in the carousel of links next to the AI snapshot.

Are you noticing a difference in how SGE handles "YMYL" (Your Money Your Life) topics compared to general lifestyle content, and has that changed your keyword targeting?

  • That’s a sharp observation, Timothy. For our financial advice clients, we’ve noticed SGE is much more conservative and often provides a disclaimer rather than a full AI answer. Because of this, we’ve actually pivoted away from broad informational keywords and started targeting long-tail, high-intent queries where users still need a deep-dive guide. The "Information Gain" score of our content—essentially adding something new that isn't already on the top 10 results—has become our primary metric for success.

We’ve found that focusing on "Zero-Click" optimization—providing so much value in the snippet that Google has to credit us—is the only way forward. It’s about brand visibility now.

  • I agree with Lisa. Even if they don't click, being the cited source in a Google AI answer builds massive brand authority that pays off in the long run.
