How can I optimize Cisco SD-WAN for better application performance in a hybrid cloud environment?

We are currently scaling our branch offices and integrating more AWS workloads. I am struggling with consistent latency issues for real-time applications. What are the best practices for configuring Cisco SD-WAN Application-Aware Routing (AAR) and Cloud OnRamp to ensure high availability and minimal jitter across multiple transports like MPLS and LTE?

All answers to this question.

To optimize performance, you must leverage Application-Aware Routing (AAR) policies. Start by defining specific SLA classes for your critical traffic, such as voice or video, setting strict thresholds for loss, latency, and jitter. Cisco SD-WAN will then dynamically shift traffic to the best available path, whether it's MPLS or a broadband link, based on real-time telemetry. Additionally, implementing Cloud OnRamp for SaaS and IaaS can significantly reduce the distance traffic travels by selecting the closest regional hub, effectively bypassing the bottleneck of backhauling traffic to a central data center.

Have you verified if your TLOC extensions are correctly configured to allow for full path redundancy across all transport types at your branch sites?

  • Michael, that is a great point. TLOC extensions are vital because they allow a WAN edge device to use the transport physically connected to a neighboring peer. Without this, you might have an idle LTE link on one router that can't be utilized by the other during a primary link failure. Ensuring the control plane is stable across these extensions is the first step before tuning AAR.

Make sure you are using the vAnalytics platform to identify long-term trends in jitter. Real-time monitoring is good, but historical data helps in fine-tuning your SLA policies.

  • I completely agree with Jennifer. vAnalytics provides that "single pane of glass" visibility which is essential for troubleshooting intermittent performance drops in complex hybrid setups.
