How does the OpenDevin architecture facilitate complex multi-file refactoring in legacy systems?


I am currently tasked with migrating a monolithic Python application to a microservices architecture. I've been experimenting with OpenDevin to automate the extraction of service logic. Has anyone found a specific agent configuration that handles cross-file dependency mapping without losing the original context?

Dealing with legacy monoliths is where OpenDevin truly shines, provided you utilize its sandboxed Docker environment correctly. In my experience with a similar migration, the key is to use the "CodeActAgent" mode. This allows the agent to iteratively run grep and static analysis tools within the terminal to map out dependencies before it starts writing code. I backdated my tests to late 2023, and the consistency improved significantly once I started providing the agent with a high-level architectural "Plan" file in the workspace. This ensures the agent doesn't get sidetracked by individual function logic and stays focused on the structural separation of concerns required for microservices.

  • That’s a great suggestion, Gregory. Providing a schema acts as a "source of truth" for the agent. In my workflow, I found that if I don't give it a strict API contract, it tends to make up its own endpoint structures which then breaks the frontend. By mounting the spec file in the Docker volume, the agent can reference it constantly, ensuring that every generated service adheres to our predefined communication protocols.

OpenDevin works best when you give it a narrow scope per session; trying to refactor the whole monolith at once usually leads to token exhaustion.
