Should my brand switch from a broad social presence to a "Niche Community" focus?

We are currently on Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok, but it feels like we are spreading our content too thin. Is it better to have a mediocre presence everywhere or to dominate one or two specific platforms? I’ve seen brands moving toward Discord and private Facebook Groups lately. Is this the end of the "Big Box" social media era for small businesses?

All answers to this question.

The "omnichannel" approach is exhausting for small teams. In 2024, "Community-Led Growth" is the most sustainable path. It is far better to have 1,000 highly engaged members in a private Facebook Group or Discord than 50,000 passive followers on a page that the algorithm suppresses. When you focus on a niche, you can tailor your content to solve specific problems, which builds massive brand loyalty. I recently advised a client to drop X and Pinterest to focus solely on a private "VIP" group on Facebook, and their repeat customer rate jumped by 22% because the community felt exclusive and heard.

Do you have the internal resources to actually moderate a private community, or are you worried it might become a ghost town if you can't post daily?

  • Mark, that’s my biggest fear. I don't want to start a Discord and then have no one talk in it. I think I might start by "niching down" our content on our strongest platform first—Instagram—and using the "Broadcast Channels" feature. It’s less work than a full Discord but still gives that feeling of a direct, private connection with our most loyal fans. If that takes off, I’ll feel more confident about hiring a dedicated community manager to handle a more complex, two-way platform like Discord.

Quality over quantity always wins. If your target audience is CEOs, why are you spending hours on TikTok? Go where your customers actually hang out and ignore the rest.

  • Preach, Susan! We see so many brands wasting budget on platforms where their buyers aren't even active. Strategy starts with subtraction, not addition.
