Can Cisco ThousandEyes provide deep visibility into O365 performance via SD-WAN?
We've recently integrated ThousandEyes with our Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN (formerly Viptela). I want to monitor the end-to-end path for Office 365 users at remote sites. How can I best utilize the Enterprise Agents and Cloud Agents to pinpoint whether a lag is happening in our local ISP, the SD-WAN overlay, or within Microsoft’s own edge network?

The best strategy is to deploy Enterprise Agents directly on your Cisco WAN Edge routers. This allows you to run "Path Visualization" tests that show exactly where packets are dropping or experiencing high latency. By comparing these results with ThousandEyes Cloud Agents (which monitor the Internet backbone), you can see if the issue is local to the branch ISP or a broader regional outage. Since O365 uses a highly distributed front-door architecture, using the "Cloud OnRamp for SaaS" integration within the vManage dashboard helps you automate the selection of the best path based on these telemetry metrics.

Are you planning to use the Endpoint Agent on actual user laptops as well, or are you only looking at the network-level performance from the router?

Steven, that’s a vital distinction. While the router agent tells you about the "pipe," the Endpoint Agent tells you about the "user experience." If the user's Wi-Fi is failing or their CPU is pegged, the network agent won't show that. Combining both gives you a complete view from the browser to the application server. For O365, seeing the browser-level waterfall charts alongside the BGP route changes is the only way to prove to management that the network isn't always the problem.

ThousandEyes is excellent for this. Just make sure you set up "Transaction Tests" for O365 to simulate a real user login, as simple ping tests don't always show the full story.

Karen's advice on Transaction Tests is key. Authentication delays are often the silent killer for O365, and simple pings will never catch those application-layer latencies.
