How to structure a Meta Ads testing framework to identify winning creatives?

We are spending $5k a month but our ads fatigue within two weeks. What is the best structure for a testing "sandbox" campaign versus a "scaling" campaign? Should we use Dynamic Creative Optimization (DCO) or test individual ads separately to see which hook and headline are actually driving the clicks?

All answers to this question.

You should adopt the "3-2-2" testing method or a dedicated Sandbox environment. In mid-2024, our framework involves one CBO (Campaign Budget Optimization) campaign purely for testing. We use Dynamic Creative with 3 videos, 2 headlines, and 2 primary texts. Once a specific combination shows a high "Estimated Action Rate" and low outbound CPC, we move that specific post ID (winning creative) into our main "Scaling" campaign. This prevents the scaling campaign from being cluttered with "losers" and ensures your big budget is only spent on proven assets.

How long do you let a test run before deciding it’s a failure? Is it based on a specific number of impressions or a certain amount of spend relative to the target CPA?

  • Jeffrey, we usually wait for 2x to 3x of our target CPA in spend. If our goal is a $20 purchase, and an ad has spent $60 with no sales, we kill it and move on.

Don't just look at ROAS for tests. Look at "Thumb-Stop Ratio" (3-second views / impressions). If people aren't stopping their scroll, the rest of the ad doesn't matter.

  • Well said, Nancy. The Thumb-Stop Ratio is the ultimate health metric for your creative. It’s the first hurdle every ad must pass before the algorithm gives it a chance.
