Is Managed Cloud Hosting better than Unmanaged for a growing SaaS?

For a startup, your time is your most expensive asset. I almost always recommend starting with a managed provider like DigitalOcean’s App Platform or even AWS Amplify. It handles the SSL certificates, OS patching, and basic scaling automatically. You’ll pay a premium—sometimes double the base cost of the hardware—but it saves you from needing a dedicated DevOps hire in the early stages. Once your monthly hosting bill hits the $2,000-$3,000 range, that is usually the tipping point where it makes financial sense to migrate to unmanaged EC2 or EKS to gain more granular control.

Do you have a plan for disaster recovery and automated backups if you go the unmanaged route? That’s usually where the "unmanaged" path gets really complicated and expensive for solo founders.

• Kevin is hitting the nail on the head. People think unmanaged is cheaper until they have a database corruption and realize they haven't tested their manual backup script in six months. With managed hosting, "Point-in-Time Recovery" is often just a checkbox. For a growing SaaS, the peace of mind knowing your data is safe is worth the extra $50 a month. I’d suggest staying managed until you have at least one person on the team whose primary job is infrastructure.

Managed hosting lets you focus on the product, not the pipes. Most successful SaaS companies I know started on Heroku or Vercel and only moved later.
