Are Machine Learning Engineers paid more than traditional Data Scientists?

I am currently finishing my Master's and I am torn between focusing on Data Science or Machine Learning Engineering. I've heard that MLEs often get higher starting offers because of the heavy software engineering requirement. Does the pay gap widen at the senior level, and which path offers better long-term stability in the AI field?

All answers to this question.

In the current market, Machine Learning Engineers do tend to have a higher starting salary, often ranging from $130,000 to $160,000 for entry-level roles at top-tier companies. This is because the role requires a blend of data science and rigorous software engineering. Data Scientists are also well-paid, but their roles sometimes lean more towards analytics and business insights, which some companies value slightly lower than production-level engineering. At the senior level, the gap persists but narrows if the Data Scientist specializes in Deep Learning.

Do you think the rise of Generative AI and LLMs is going to shift the demand and pay more toward the Research Scientist side or the Engineering side?

  • James, the current trend is heavily favoring the Engineering side. Companies are desperate for people who can actually "deploy" and "scale" these models rather than just research them. MLOps is becoming the buzzword that drives the highest salary increments right now because it bridges that gap between a raw model and a functional, profitable product for the business.

It really depends on the company. At a startup, an MLE is worth their weight in gold because they wear many hats, including data engineering.

  • Exactly, Patricia. Startups often pay a premium in equity for MLEs who can build the entire pipeline from scratch, which can lead to a massive payout later on.
