Will AI Agents make the software development career path more accessible for non technical people?

I keep hearing that "English is the new coding language" because of AI agents. Does this mean the field of software development is opening up to everyone, or will there always be a need for deep technical expertise to manage these agents?

All answers to this question.

While it’s true that you can now generate a website using natural language, building a scalable, secure enterprise application still requires deep technical knowledge. A non-technical person might be able to create a prototype, but they won't understand how to optimize database queries or handle complex state management. I think AI agents make the "entry" easier, but the "mastery" remains just as difficult. The agents are assistants, not replacements for a computer science foundation. We might see more "citizen developers," but the core engineering roles are safe for now.

Do you believe we will see a new job title like "AI Orchestrator" specifically for people who bridge that gap between business and code?

  • I think that’s already happening, George. Many Product Managers are essentially becoming AI Orchestrators. They use tools to build functional requirements that agents then turn into code. However, they still need a technical lead to make sure the final product isn't a "spaghetti code" nightmare under the hood.

It definitely lowers the bar for simple tasks. I've seen marketing people write their own automation scripts now, which is actually quite helpful for the dev team.

  • Agreed, Helen. It removes the minor tickets from our backlog. If others can handle their own small scripts, it lets us focus on the heavy-duty infrastructure.
