Is it still worth learning Hadoop in 2024 with the rise of Serverless Big Data tools?
I see a lot of jobs requiring Snowflake, BigQuery, and Databricks. As a student entering the Big Data field, should I spend time learning HDFS and MapReduce, or should I skip straight to cloud-native platforms? Is the traditional Hadoop ecosystem becoming obsolete in modern enterprises?

While cloud-native tools are taking over, the concepts behind Hadoop are still the foundation of everything. Understanding HDFS helps you understand how S3 or Azure Data Lake Works. Knowing MapReduce helps you write better Spark or SQL queries because you understand the underlying "shuffle and sort" mechanics. Many legacy systems in banking and healthcare still run on Cloudera or Hortonworks. However, if you are looking for a job in a fast-paced startup, prioritize Spark and Snowflake. Use Hadoop as your theoretical foundation but focus your hands-on practice on cloud-scale tools.

Do you prefer working on the infrastructure side or the data analysis side? If you want to be a Data Engineer, the "nitty-gritty" of Hadoop is still vital. If you want to be a Data Analyst, why not just focus on SQL and Tableau?

Richard, I definitely want to be a Data Engineer. I enjoy building the pipelines and managing the clusters. Based on your advice, I’ll learn the core concepts of YARN and HDFS but focus my projects on deploying them via Kubernetes or using managed services like EMR.

Hadoop isn't dead; it just evolved. Most "modern" tools are just abstractions of the original Hadoop whitepapers. Learn the history to master the future. It’s worth the effort.

Well said, Susan. Even "Serverless" tools have servers; they just hide them from you. Knowing what's happening under the hood makes you a much better troubleshooter when things eventually break.
