Is Cyber Security a safe career choice against the rise of AI-driven automation?

I’m considering a career change and everyone is talking about job losses. Is Cyber Security considered an "AI-proof" domain for the next three years, or is the technology already advanced enough to automate threat detection and response to the point where fewer human analysts are needed?

All answers to this question.

Actually, Cyber Security is one of the few fields where AI is creating more work for humans. While it's true that basic threat detection is being automated, hackers are also using AI to create more sophisticated, polymorphic malware. This creates an "arms race" that requires highly skilled human intervention to oversee the AI defense systems. We are moving from a world of manual monitoring to a world of "AI orchestration." You won't be replaced by AI, but you will be replaced by a security professional who knows how to leverage AI. The next three years will see a massive shortage of people who can handle the ethical and strategic complexities of AI-powered attacks.

Will the entry-level SOC (Security Operations Center) analyst roles disappear if AI handles the initial alert triaging?

  • Sean, the "traditional" SOC Level 1 role is definitely changing. Instead of looking at logs all day, a junior in Cyber Security will now spend their time investigating the complex anomalies that the AI couldn't solve. It makes the job more interesting but also harder to get into without a deeper understanding of network architecture. The barrier to entry is higher, but the long-term career stability is much stronger than in general IT roles.

It's the most resilient field right now. As long as there is digital data, there will be a need for human accountability in security.

  • Exactly, Diana. No CEO is going to leave their company's entire Cyber Security posture in the hands of a black-box algorithm without human oversight.
