Is Zero Trust Architecture actually achievable for small companies with limited IT budgets?

We keep hearing about "Zero Trust" as the gold standard for cybersecurity in 2024, especially for remote workforces. But for a small company, it sounds like an expensive overhaul. Can we implement the "Never Trust, Always Verify" philosophy using our existing cloud tools, or does this require a complete migration to new security frameworks?

All answers to this question.

You absolutely don't need a million-dollar budget to start a Zero Trust journey. In 2025, the focus should be on Identity and Access Management (IAM). Start by auditing your current permissions and enforcing the "Principle of Least Privilege." Users should only have access to the specific folders they need for their daily tasks. Combine this with a robust Identity Provider that supports conditional access—where the system checks the user's location and device health before granting entry to company apps.

Deborah, when you talk about auditing permissions, how often should a small firm realistically perform these reviews without it becoming an administrative nightmare for the owner?

  • Kevin, I recommend doing a "Micro-Audit" once a month for high-privilege accounts and a full review every quarter. Using automated tools within your cloud suite can flag inactive users or "shadow IT" apps, which saves hours of manual work and keeps your attack surface significantly smaller.

Zero Trust is more of a mindset than a single product. You can start by simply requiring MFA for every single login, which effectively stops most credential theft.

  • Great point, Charles. Identity is the new perimeter in 2023. If you secure the login, you've solved half the battle regardless of where the employee is working.
