What are the most difficult sections to master during PMP certification training sessions?

I am starting my PMP certification training next week and I'm a bit nervous about the math and the formulas. Which domains or topics usually give students the most trouble, and how should I prioritize my study efforts to ensure a passing score?

All answers to this question.

Most people worry about the formulas for Earned Value Management (EVM), but once you understand the logic behind the numbers, they become the easiest points to get on the exam. The real challenge in PMP certification training is the situational questions. These are the "What should the project manager do first?" type of questions where all four answers look correct. You have to learn to think like the PMI. Focus heavily on the "People" and "Process" domains, as they make up the bulk of the test. Understanding the difference between a change request and a work-around is crucial.

Is it still necessary to memorize all the ITTOs (Inputs, Tools, Techniques, and Outputs) like people did in the older versions?

  • Thankfully, no! The current exam focuses more on the application of concepts rather than rote memorization. You need to understand the flow—why a certain document is an input to a process—but you don't need to recite lists like a robot. This makes the training much more interesting because you are learning the "logic" of management rather than just a bunch of acronyms.

Focus on the Agile mindset. Many people fail because they try to apply traditional waterfall thinking to an Agile scenario.

  • Great advice, Cynthia. The hybrid approach is a major part of the training now, so being flexible in your thinking is the key to success.
