Will AI automation eventually replace Software Development and Data Science roles in the industry?

There is a lot of buzz about LLMs writing code and performing data cleaning. Do you think AI will eventually make human developers and analysts obsolete, or will it just change our tools? I am worried about the long-term career stability in these specific tech domains.

All answers to this question.

From my perspective in the industry, AI is far more likely to be a co-pilot than a replacement. While it can generate boilerplate code and simple scripts, it lacks the high-level architectural understanding and business logic required for complex Software Development. For Data Science, AI can automate the mundane parts of data cleaning, but it cannot interpret the "why" behind the data or align it with a company’s strategic goals. I believe the roles will evolve; we will spend less time typing and more time auditing and designing systems that AI helps us build.

If AI handles the coding, do you think junior-level positions will disappear since those tasks are the easiest to automate?

  • That is a valid concern, Ryan. Entry-level roles will definitely look different. Instead of just writing syntax, a junior dev will need to focus on prompt engineering and code review early on. Companies will still need a pipeline of talent, so they’ll have to adapt how they train new hires to work alongside these tools rather than just competing with them for basic tasks.

AI is just the new IDE. Developers who use it will replace those who don't, but the human element of problem-solving is here to stay.

  • I agree with Deborah. In my experience with Cloud Technology, we use AI to manage infrastructure, but a human still has to make the final call on security and cost-efficiency.
