The role isn't disappearing, but the "Administrative PM" is definitely at risk. Generative AI is a force multiplier for the boring stuff—documentation, scheduling, and minutes. This frees you up to be a "Strategic PM." You should focus on AI literacy—knowing how to prompt the models to get accurate risk assessments or resource forecasts. However, the human elements like conflict resolution, negotiating with stakeholders, and ethical decision-making are things AI won't master anytime soon. The best PMs will be those who use AI to handle the data so they can focus on the people.

• Richard, I actually saw a recent update from PMI mentioning "AI in Project Management" as a core focus for 2024. They are already integrating these concepts into their professional development units (PDUs). It’s not just about "prompting" though; it’s about understanding the ethics of using AI-generated data for high-stakes project decisions and ensuring that the human PM remains the ultimate authority for the project's success or failure.

AI is just a tool. It can draw a Gantt chart, but it can't tell you if your lead developer is burnt out or if a stakeholder is lying about their requirements.
