What are the most important KPIs to track for measuring content marketing ROI?

Our management is asking for a report on the effectiveness of our recent content campaign. Beyond simple metrics like page views and likes, what are the hard KPIs we should be tracking to prove that our content marketing is delivering a positive Return on Investment (ROI) for the business?

All answers to this question.

To prove ROI, focus on "Customer Acquisition Cost" (CAC) from content-sourced leads and "Content Attribution." Use Google Analytics to track assisted conversions—this shows how many customers touched a blog post before eventually making a purchase. Also, track "Organic Search Share of Voice" and "Retention Rate" for customers who engage with your content vs. those who don't. By showing that content-engaged leads close faster or have a higher "Lifetime Value" (LTV), you provide the financial justification your management needs to continue investing in the strategy.

Those are great high-level metrics, but are you also monitoring the "Engagement Rate" per individual author or content category? This could help you identify which specific topics are resonating with your core audience and which ones are just wasting your production budget without driving any meaningful action.

  • Steven, we actually just started a monthly audit of our "Cost Per Lead" by content category. It turned out our technical deep-dives were 3x more effective than our "top 10" listicles. We’ve since shifted our budget to double down on those long-form technical pieces, and the ROI is already looking much healthier.

Don't overlook "Backlink Quality." If your content is attracting high-authority links naturally, it's boosting your site's overall domain authority, which has a long-term value that far exceeds a single sale.

  • Spot on, Melissa. Those earned media links are essentially free advertising that keeps on giving for years. It's the most sustainable way to build a brand online.
